The primary goal of a dash mount is to stay mounted, and this unit does that quite well. The difficulty of using a suction-cup mount such as this lies not in the mount itself, but with your vehicle and finding a sufficiently level spot on the dash to place the mount. Once I managed to find a reasonable spot on the dash of my Toyota Sienna (2006 model), the mount held throughout a 1,500-mile trip over five days and had to be wrestled off at the conclusion of the trip. The grip was wide enough to hold my LG G2 (see picture) and would also accommodate my wife’s Galaxy Note 3.

A few caveats. First, this is not a one-handed device. You need two hands: one to open the grip, the other to insert or remove your phone. Second, a large phone held in portrait mode will have to be tilted back or raised up in the grip to allow enough room to insert a power cord (if your phone charges from the bottom). Third, you will have to fiddle with the positioning of your phone if your volume controls are on the side to be sure the grips are not gripping the volume (or power). With my G2, that was never a problem (power and volume buttons are on the back).

Based on my one trip’s experience, this is a good mount that holds your phone in place, which is all it is expected to do.

I’ve owned a number of phone mounts over the years and all of them have something to be desired. Whether they are unstable and shake when hitting bumps or leaving a gooey residue on the back of your device (I’m looking at you, GripGo), I have pretty much wasted my money on all of them.

This mount is completely different. It does not use a traditional suction cup, but instead uses a rubbery, sticky disc to adhere to a window or dash. Once placed into position it is absolutely staying put. In fact, I would recommend selecting the location you want to mount it and then test placement first before actually affixing it as it can be tough to remove. CAUTION: be wary of applying this to thinner dashboard plastics. I actually a portion of my dash flexing when I tried to reposition the mount…it sticks that hard.

Once the mount is placed, you can rotate the base of the “stem” of the holder around to it’s desired position and then turn a dial at the base to lock it into position. Once secured you can then adjust the actual mount itself that holds your device to it’s desired position and then lock that into place as well by turning a small bolt to tighten.

The mechanism that actually holds the phone is a very robust “pincher” type of clamp…sort of like a gigantic chip-clip. I have an absolutely ENORMOUS smartphone (LG G FLEX) and this mount holds it just fine, with a little room to spare. Note that it takes some hand strength to open the clamp (the spring inside is very strong), so some folks may have some trouble opening and closing it to insert/remove their device.

Overall, this seems like an extremely robust mount that solves many of the problems of lesser option, and while it is not perfect (can be hard to open the clamp, limited adjustability options), it is the best one I’ve ever used. My device absolutely does not move when locked into place and can be applied to surfaces that are not perfectly smooth. Good stuff…woukd buy again.

The suction cup also has a sticky coating on it (pro and con)
How long will the sticky coating remain useful?

As of the writing of this review I have had this product for 2 months, and used it many times. I believe it’s one of the best out there. I have tried other in-car phone holders and always seem to be disappointed. It easily sticks to just about any flat surface of my car (windshield, dashboard, center console, etc). But, probably my favorite feature is how simple and easy it is to put in and take out a phone. I recently made a big road trip and was using my phone (Nexus 5) as my navigation, then when my wife would drive, she would use her phone (iPhone 5S), swapping between the two was so simple and fast. We could also easily place the mount where we preferred.

The only fault, which isn’t always a fault, is the fact that the suction cup has a sticky surface to it. This allows it to stick to any flat surface, great for what it does, but it makes it really difficult to remove from the windshield, or dashboard. But, really it’s not a big deal because usually once it is placed I don’t move it. Overall I highly recommend this phone car mount. Buy it and you won’t be dissapointed.
