Decent (but not excellent) minimal Nexus S case – mods required,
This case is a single piece of hard rubber. Not gel-like, so it’s not a lint collector. The rubber is solid but squeezable enough to help dissipate the energy from the shock of an accidental drop (assuming that phone doesn’t drop on the glass face). It has a great in-the-hand feel, no slippery feeling like the bare phone. Because of the extreme texturing of the case sides, I doubt I’ll have the phone slip out of my hands. Since the case covers the buttons as a single piece, it does take a slight more amount of effort to make sure the volume and on/off buttons are activated (but only a slight amount). I consider this a bonus as the buttons are now not so sensitive to accidental depression but your mileage may vary.
The case provides a very snug fit. It does not appear to collect dust inside it to rub against the back of the phone. Key cut-outs (speaker, flash, and camera) register very well. The raised rubber rim on the face allows you to put the phone glass-side down without worries of scratching.
There are issues, however, with the jack cut-outs: the USB and the headset. Here the thickness of the case prevents the USB cable from seating down on the device. I enlarged the openings carefully with a knife, opening the hole by about 2 mm. The case now worked perfectly with the micro-USB cable supplied with the phone.
However, a 3rd party micro-USB cable (like that supplied by Amazon) can have too much plastic at its head and it’s not possible to cut the case open enough to accommodate these cables without ruining the case’s sturdy integrity. At present, I use the phone-supplied cable to do data transfer (where the seating is very critical) and the 3rd party cables for charging (where the seating is not as important).
I docked a star from the review because I had to modify the case to get it to work with the phone-supplied hardware.
I have not used the screen protectors, but they really aren’t necessary and only degrade the quality of the image on your Super AMOLED screen. And you know they aren’t of high-quality when you get 6 screen protectors essentially for free.
Until a better case comes out with perfect jack cut-outs, this will be a fine, economical way to protect my new Nexus S. It won’t slide off the phone accidentally, adds only a minimal amount of thickness to the slim phone, and provides a very solid traction in your hand against slippage.
UPDATE 2/22/11: There were so many things to recommend this case, but I’m moving on to the Amzer Luxe Argyle High Gloss TPU Soft Gel Skin Case for Samsung/Google Nexus S – Smoke Grey. The reason? The rubber in this case is a bit too hard and it does take significant pressure to use the on/off button. Also the hardness of the rubber makes it a little bit difficult to pop the case off without feeling like you are putting undo pressure on the phone. Also the density of the rubber increases the weight of the overall phone significantly. It’s not a bad case, it’s just that I want the rubber to be a bit more pliable for case on/off and for the on/off button.
