   Solid case, but has some flawed design choices, October 2, 2015

   This is a solid case. If I drop my phone, I know this Otterbox will protect it from most falls, which I would expect from an almost $60 case.

   However, this case does has some flawed design choices that will almost certainly impact the longevity of the case, which is something I would NOT expect from an almost $60 case.

   First and foremost, the pros:
   Great protection all around
   Does not add too much bulk given that the Iphone 6s+ is already large
   Not slippery, feels great in the hands
   The screen cover isn’t all that bad
   There is a cover over the finger print reader that hasn’t affected the reader itself (added protection against wear)
   Volume / sound buttons are a little tough to push in, but still feel great

   The cons:
   My two major concerns with this case, which will likely impact the longevity of the case itself, are the way the port covers open up and how much they open up.

   1) The port covers are great, don’t get me wrong. However, they open up towards the front bezel. That means that the smallest part of the case will experience the most stress. If there is a rip, the rip will move forward towards the front part of the screen. Since there is not much material between where the port opens up and where the front part of the case ends, if there is a rip, it won’t be long until the whole port cover is ripped off. Even if there isn’t a rip, anytime you open up the port covers, you are putting stress on the front bezel part of the case. It will eventually stretch out and the rubber part of the case will no longer be securely attached to the case.

   2) In addition, the port covers do not open widely enough. So in order to get the power plug in or an aux jack cable, you have to force the port covers to open up more than what appears to be intended, meaning that there is more stress on the front bezel of the case than what was intended. If you use an aux jack cable like I do for car trips, you are essentially forcing the port cover to be open wider than what was intended and it will be sitting that like for some time. This will certainly impact the longevity of the case.

   I have included photos to show you what I mean.

   In the future, I hope that Otterbox will make the port covers open toward the back part of the case, since there is more material to support higher levels of stress. This would also allow the port covers to open up more (since the phone’s ports are located in a more forward position on the phone). I realize that this would likely have an impact on the ability to dock the phone with the case on, but you still can’t really do that now given the thickness of the case anyways.

   For now, 4 out of 5 – I will update this review in a few months to see if it holds up or if my concerns prove to be true.

   Edit on 10/17/15: I’ve dropped my phone a couple times already, and this case has absolutely protected my phone, so that makes me happy

   Edit on 1/3/16: Happy New Year everyone! I figured I would give you all an update on how the case is holding up. To be honest, it is holding up pretty dang well! I’ve dropped my phone a least ten times and there hasn’t been any damage to the phone or case, so that is great! The rubber around the edge of the case is still holding up. It has stretched a little, but not to the point where it isn’t connected to the hard case inside. I will still keep an eye on it. The only other issue I have experienced is water. I sometimes get a little water on the case and if I get it on the finger print reader, it WILL get under the screen protector. Once the water gets under the screen, it will spread across it, which causes the keyboard to be useless until I take the case off to get rid of the water. Other than that, I really appreciate the protection this case offers!

   I have used Otterbox cases for many years for my iPhones and my iPad 2 and 3, iPad Air and iPad Air 2 tablets. They are about the best protection you can get for an iPhone if you can tolerate the added size and weight that the case adds to the phone. I have a new iPhone 6S Plus and I ordered my case directly from Otterbox as they were releasing a new case design for the iPhone 6S Plus. The new iPhone 6S Plus is slightly larger than the iPhone 6 Plus and the Otterbox cases are so tight they wanted to make sure that their cases fit the new phone. My case from Otterbox is model 77-52240. This is the new case that is a combo case for the iPhone 6 Plus and 6S Plus. This color combination is called Indigo Harbor.

   Inside of the box you will find the belt clip on holster that also acts as a phone stand that allows you to set the phone up to watch videos. The phone can snap into the holster face in for added protection or face out for your ability to use the phone or to watch videos. One side of the holster has two curved corners that protect the edges of the case from falling and the top has a snap on latch that securely locks the case into position in the holster. The back of the holster has a rotating clip that allows the holster to spin 360 degrees and you can wear the holster at any angle that is comfortable but I recommend that the extended corners stay down for added security if possible. The clip can also be locked open to be used as a stand and twisting the clip allows you to set the angle at which your phone will stand up. I show this in my video.

   The case is a clam shell polycarbonate shell that fits into the silicone outer case. The inner case has foam on the inside back cover to protect your phone from shock, vibration and scratches and the inner clamshell locks around your phone to protect it. The outer case is a high density silicone that adds protection against drops and bumps. The ports are covered with flaps that are tight and designed to lock into place. They are designed to minimize the ingress of moisture or dust into the critical switches and ports. The phone front screen has a cover that covers all of it including the home button. The home button is covered with a thin plastic cover that allows you to easily use the fingerprint sensor and it works fine. Even the 3D screen touch feature works fine. (Please see my video) Having the entire front covered helps to keep dirt, dust, fibers, oils and spills off of the screen.

   The edge of the case is high around the front of the phone. All of the controls are accessible and the dual cameras and flash are uncovered to allow you to still take good photos and videos. In the video I assemble the case and show the details of its design and assembly. It is nicely designed and rugged. If you are like me I drop my phone on occasion and always on the hardest and worse surface you can find. I have never damaged my phone while it is an Otterbox case!

   Overall it is a nice case and it is a much better design than the one for my iPhone 5S. The only weakness I can see is that I like hardened glass screen covers as I feel they are very protective and I think Otterbox should look at that type of screen cover in the future. Overall I rate this at 4.5 stars but since there is no ½ star ratings I rounded it up to a 5 star rating.

   Just purchased the iPhone 6S Plus and this Otterbox Defender case. There is a huge difference when you put this case on. 1) Its bulky and makes the phone feel like a brick. 2) My anxiety of dropping the phone IS GONE! I no longer worry about dropping my $950 phone and ABSOLUTELY love the belt clip (this is why I decided on Otterbox). If only Otterbox made a belt clip for the Commuter series. It seams that Otterbox has in fact addressed the issue of the screen protector gap. The gap is either gone or barely noticeable. That being said, I HATE the screen protector! It attracts oil and finger prints which makes the phone look dirty. Next, the screen protector KILLS the beauty of the iPhone IPS LCD display. It makes it look more like your average laptop display by reducing the color contrast of the screen (the resolution seams okay). It NO LONGER feels like there is no screen and you are touching the apps themselves :( . Force touch/3D touch and the finger print sensor seams to be working alright, although I DID notice a very slight lag (not an issue). Also, they did a good job by leaving a bit of space between the rim of the case and the screen so you can access the drop down and slide up menus without to much of an issue. The case appears to be VERY WELL built and has a solid feel. The otter shell is matte and provides EXCELLENT grip which is crucial for a phone this size (eliminates drop anxiety during one handed use). I now feel confident when using my iPhone 6S Plus with one hand. Overall, this case has GREAT potential if Otterbox addresses the issue of the screen protector. They NEED to implement a tempered glass screen protector into this case or al least give you that option.
